Healthier Alternatives to Frying Seafood

We are all trying to find ways to make our favourite foods healthier. When it comes to deep-fried seafood, finding alternatives may seem difficult at first. Still, with some savvy culinary manoeuvring, you can find some equally delicious options without all of those unhealthy fats. Try our Online Seafood Delivery service.

Seafood is highly nutritious. Eating it on a daily basis can significantly reduce your risk of a variety of health problems, including heart disease, depression, diabetes and more. (Learn more about it here) As a result, health professionals often recommend consuming seafood at least once or twice a week. However, the method of cooking your seafood can affect its nutritional value, so some cooking methods may be better for your health than others. Deep frying is definitely not one of those methods, but is it delicious!

That's why we have put together a list of our three favourite seafood deep-frying alternatives that are just as delicious as traditional fried seafood but packed with essential nutrients.

1. Air Frying

Air fryers are quite popular in the U.K. However, despite their name, they do not actually fry. Your seafood goodies are placed in a perforated basket, and hot air circulates around them, crisping and browning them nicely. These amazing appliances are a great way to get that fried texture and taste without any of the oil that deep-frying requires. Some of our favourite air frying seafood recipes include crispy parmesan air fryer cod, air fryer lemon pepper shrimp, and air fryer crab cakes served with a spicy aioli.

2. Nutty Crunch

Nuts are an excellent way to add crunch to your favourite seafood recipes without adding any extra calories! Even though most of these nutty recipes are baked, these crispy coatings give the taste and texture of deep fat frying. Peanuts, almonds, walnuts, or pistachios are all fine, and depending on the seafood you are preparing, they can add a lot of richness to the taste. When crushed into a semi-fine powder, nuts act as a bread crumb coating and are usually coupled with crunchy crumbs for extra oomph. Some of our favourite nutty crust seafood recipes include almond-parmesan crusted salmon, pistachio-crusted fish with lemon dill aioli and roasted cod with celery walnut and olive stuffing.

3. Crisping in the Oven

The oven is perhaps the easiest alternative to deep-frying seafood — and a favourite amongst Brits too. To allow for better airflow, place your fresh seafood on a baking sheet with a wire rack. Another of our handy tricks is to use 'unconventional' breading. Cereals, biscuits and crackers, pretzels, or unsweetened shredded coconut are examples of alternate crumbs with a little more crunch. When finely crushed, all of these options pair beautifully with fresh seafood. Two of our favourite oven-fried seafood recipes include cornflake-crusted crunchy fish sticks and oven-fried oysters.
